The Human Resources function has come a long way. It’s not all fluffy stuff and simply filled with conversations managers don’t want to have. In fact, it hasn’t been that way for a while. But we still have a way to go. We need to change to meet the changes in our organizations and in the world. Harder questions. More data. Better technology. Deeper insights.
HR needs to be a more nerdy. This means:
- Pursue Truth. Best practices are only “best” if they are proven and repeatable (hint: most aren’t). We must always be looking for why something works, not simply what has worked. We need to know the root cause. We have to challenge.
- Love Data. We are surrounded by data, and need to learn how to use it. This doesn’t mean being good at Excel or gathering more survey data. It means integrating data-based decision making into everything we do, and utilizing analytics to identify patterns that lead to better decisions.
- Embrace Technology. Smart people make cool stuff, and we should use it. That latest app or tool might be exactly what you need to work smarter, faster, and cheaper. Don’t use sticks and rocks when someone invented Excel.
- Learn Constantly. Every conversation, article, and experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. We continue to adapt and innovate when we focus most of our energies on observing and learning. Engage with like-minded people to share insights as openly as possible.
